A dupatta is a long headscarf popular in traditional clothing of many Asian cultures. Also called a chunni, the scarf is commonly seen throughout India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. The dupatta can be draped over the head and shoulders in many different ways and can be worn with everything from pantsuits to evening gowns.

Originally paired with a salwar kameez, dupattas are now being increasingly paired with chudidhar, Anarkali suits, Patiala suits etc. The origin of the dupatta is quite unknown but it has always been a part of the ensemble.

Earlier dupattas were made in the same color scheme as the salwar kameez or in the base color. They were made of chiffon or some kind of synthetic material. But nowadays, you will find dupattas made of raw silk, cotton, net etc. They are being sold separately and women are mixing and matching their dupattas.

Dupattas are made of all varieties of fabrics, natural and man-made. They are made of coarse and loosely woven cottons and the finest muslins of delicate chiffons and shimmering silks.

They are woven using intricate weaving and coloring methods such as ikkats, batik, Bandhini, jamdanis, etc., or embroidered with silks of many hues and gold and silver threads, beads, sequins, shells, spangles and more.

The designs, techniques and methods are innumerable and modified and changed only according to the maker’s skills and the wearer’s fancy.

Dupatta, it is a symbol of femininity, it signifies modesty and it enhances the beauty of the attire. Traditionally, dupatta is worn with its centre resting on the chest like a garland with both ends thrown loosely over each shoulder.

Dupattas are ideally taken during the summer months as they get replaced by shawls and stoles during winter months. They can also act as a wrap during the light chill experienced during summer nights.

A dupatta not only is utilitarian but is also a great way to make a style statement by pairing it with other garments.

Tie-dye with very fashionably updated styles and designs, has become the fashion mania today.

When it comes to fashion, a uniquely designed Tie-dye garment will be a sure hit in the fashion industry these days. As from accessories to garments, it has made a mark with its unique appearances and flawless trendy varieties. Definitely, Tie-dye apparel will make the wearer like a living piece of art.

Tie-dye, a process or technique of hand-dyeing the fabric by tying a piece of cloth into a tight bundle, is basically a variegated pattern which gives a streaked or mottled look to the fabric.

Originally, the process of tie-dye refers to the dyeing of fabrics, where the portions of fabric are covered by resists or bindings that do not acquire dye colour during the colouring process. So, the dyeing is prevented from certain penetrated portions of the fabrics that are not meant to be coloured. However, they acquire the design through the uncoloured portions.

Dying is an ancient pastime of hippies, counter-culture members and etc. But, Tie-dye is a modern art form invented by the Americans in the early 1960s for a set of ancient-resist dying techniques and their products. However, there are some earliest evidences on the survival of Tie-dye in Peru during 500-810AD, Japan in 8th century and Hausa region of West Africa used for centuries. But the Tie-dye has became world famous by an American Professor from Columbia University, by means of samples and live demonstrations.

In India, Gujarat and Rajasthan are the major hubs of Tie-dye fabrics. The techniques like single-Ikkat where either the warp or weft is tied and then dyed and double-Ikkat where both the warp and weft are individually tied and dyed are used widely in India.

Tie-dye is used to create a wide variety of fabrics right from accessories to apparels like sarees, salwar suits, kurtis, dupattas and western outfits etc with wide range of designs such as spiral, diamond, peace sign and other marble effects.

Techniques like stencils, screen printings, blocks, stitches and other discharging pastes are widely used in Tie-dye. Dyes like vat dyes, direct dyes, napthol dyes and procion dyes, fiber reactive and other household dyes are under use. Both the protein based and synthetic based fabrics can be dyed with acid dyes. A typical tie-dye process consists of 3 steps:
Folding
Twisting
Pleating or crumpling

Different patterns or designs on to the fabrics can be created by using another three steps such as making the stripes, creating the spiral and creating the folka dots. Unlike resist-dying techniques, a typical Tie-dye is characterized by use of saturated primary colours and bold patterns with spiral, mandala and peace signs with simple motifs, monochromatic colour schemes, postures, trendy designs, dots, stripes, animals, birds and other square designs are beautifully adorned on to fabrics.

Bandani, Leharia, Batik, Assam sicos, Orissan handlooms and Ikkat weavings are the soothing pieces for all grand occasions.

However, the popularity of Tie-dye emerged to an enhanced version of Tie-dye, i.e., sophisticated Tie-dye and has become the shadow to the fashion industry.

Unnatisilks, has trendy designs, attractive patterns, in pleasing colours and combinations in its wide collection of Tie and Dye Sarees, at very reasonable prices.

‘Practice makes the best from the rest’ – is today proved by artisans of Patachitra.

Arts and paintings are the mirrors of India. One of the most alluring painting works on textiles is Patachitra.

Patachitra is a vibrant, unique, fine and captivating artwork to display the finesse and dexterous of Indian craftsmanship at its best.

Patachitra or Pattachitra, an ancient art form where the Sanskrit words ‘Patta’ and ‘chitra’ refers to ‘cloth’ and ‘picture’, is basically a cloth-based scroll painting or a picture painting on cloth. It is one of the fascinating creations of Indians that depicts Hindu mythological tales and wonders.

It is an old generation indigenous art, but simply tantalizing the perfectionists.

Basically, Patachitra artwork has a traditional appeal and is inborn with cultural Indian values, customs and rituals, which are the parts of Hindu faith. It is also an immense facet of Indian accessories and other forms of ethnic fashions as well.

This wondrous form of art work was conceptualized by Orissa or Odessa people and dates back to 500BC. According to the historical evidences, village ‘Puri’ is the birth place for Patachitra, which is still popular for this art work. The artisans ‘Mohapatras’ or ‘Maharanas’ are the first craftsman of Patachitra. The richest history of Orissa lent its inspiration to its creative weavers through paintings and detailed skilful works.

The basic form of Patachitra was revolved around the beliefs and ideologies of two cults Jagannath’s and Vaishnava’s. However, West Bengal and Bengal are also the major states that are widely practising Patachitra, apart from Orissa.

The Orissa craftsman offered sufficient scope for this painstakingly and meticulously executed, unique ethnic offering that ‘wowed’ even the contemporary audience today. Rich in colour, along with extraordinary designs and motifs, the Patachitra on sari showcases the tradition and cultures of India.

The style of Patachitra is a unique blend of classical and folk elements along with Mughal influences in it when it comes to the appeal of characters and fashion sense. It also displays epics and religious themes in a detailed narration on any broad canvas.

The features of each character are described in detail with clear dark lines which gives a definite shape and appeal to the figure. The background of each narrative is simple and not too detailed as the main characters and actions need to be focused. The major element observed in each Patachitra art is ‘border’. It is used to showcase uniformity to the entire painting.

Natural and vegetable dyes are used by craftsman rather than chemicals, as to display the art natural. Traditional colours such as red, green, yellow, blue, white and orange are used to define each and every section of painting. Apart from paint and motifs, no additional embellishments are used in making Patachitra.

Patachitra sari adorned by mythological stories and tribal folk arts looks unique in any grand occasion. Some organic shining and hand painted Patachitra saris ‘wows’ the viewers with their awesomeness.
