STYLISH PURE HANDLOOM SAMBALPURI COTTON SAREES FROM ODISHA @UNNATISILKS

The traditional Sambalpuri Saree in its cotton and silk versions is a captivating fabric from the tribal belt of Odisha. Sambalpur in the state of Odisha, India, is famous for its Sambalpuri variety of pure cotton sarees and pure silk sarees, using Ikkat patterns or the tie-dye method in their making. Cotton and mercerized cotton are used in making sambalpuri cotton saris.

The need for a fabric similar to silk, which has lustre, strength, smoothness and soft feel, plus its elasticity and desirable quality to acquire most colours and shades is provided by mercerized cotton, a more affordable and appealing substitute. Cotton has the best absorption capacity among fabrics and is a ‘breathing’ fabric which allows free air movement. This allows the body to cool and keeps it comfortable in hot and sultry weather conditions.

Mercerization is a treatment for cellulosic materials like cotton fabric and thread that gives the fabric or yarns a lustrous appearance, strengthens them and yet maintains the above mentioned quality of pure cotton.

handloom weaving
The Ikkat style of weaving is employed in the hand-woven Sambalpuri saree using geometrical patterns. Ikkat is a technique which involves applying bindings, which resist dye penetration to the threads in pre-determined patterns, and then dyeing the threads. These dyed threads are then woven to produce the desired pattern.

Within the ikkat style are variants of single-ikkat and double-ikkat. Alternately the tie-die method of weaving and then dyeing, known as ‘bandhakala’ is also used. Here the threads are first woven and the resist bindings then applied to the fabric before dyeing it.
This traditional art uses vegetable dyes to a large extent, with a leaning toward artificial colours in present day creations. Black, yellow, orange, maroon, are the preferred hues. Sambalpuri pure cotton sarees find preference for daily-wear as well as for casual occasions and generally housewives and college-goers choose to wear them.

The new-look Sambalpuri Cotton Sarees onlinefrom Unnati are a healthy blend of traditional with trending, elevating eye-catching appeal to bewitching heights. Unnati experiments with traditional styles in a fusion with modern designs and patterns. There is Sambalpuri saree, that has an appealing look for depictions of nature, animals and birds. It is preferred for traditional functions and festive occasions.

There are some sarees that employ the ikat style of tie-dye, where the threads are dyed with contrasting colours before they are woven with a special ‘extra weft’ technique.

Bright coloured panels with extra motifs on a highly contrasting background make this tribal art fabric uniquely stand out. Motif patterns commonly adorning the fabric are bitter gourd, the atasi flower, the kanti-phul or small flower, peacocks and birds, Konark temple, conches.

In one saree the initial or large motif known as Buttah, such a bird sitting on a tree, is woven on the body. This accentuates the fabric look. The smaller motifs decorate the borders and pallu, and have pomegranate seeds, Saara seeds and temple spires as popular subjects.

The exotic Batik Print Sarees, Batik Cotton Saris Online

Batik is a process using ‘resists’ for making designs on a fabric. The conventional Batik process has a resist or a physical block in some form or the other to prevent desired areas on the fabric from being penetrated by dye. Generally wax is used as a resist in Batik. The block printed areas where resists are in place, come out as un-dyed areas in the dyed fabric and could be coloured differently in repeat wax dye process. This can be repeated several times at the same place or different places with wax-dye process time and again for every subsequent colour change. Batik can be done with various types of dye & wax on cotton, silk and other natural fabrics. Cotton is easy to work with and generally gives best results. Repeated waxing and dyeing over the same place gets newer overlapping results. The idea in multi-layer colouring is to start with lighter shades of the dye and proceed to deeper ones. Here care is taken that wax resist is neither light nor heavy since lighter would mean possible penetration of dye onto resist area and heavy would mean the wax will not resist properly and could cause patches or dye spreads when removed.

The rarer but finer Pen Batik saris
The rarer type of Batik is Pen Batik. Fine designs are made on the fabric using ‘Tjanting’ tools. Molten wax at a certain temperature is carefully put on the design lines with Batik dropper pen.
A lot of care has to be taken since too thin a layer could give way to colour dye through surface cracks. Temperature of the wax is normally kept between 200 and 230 degrees. In the former or conventional method vats or tubs with boiling water are used to melt away the wax. In the latter a small tub with hot water is generally preferred. After the entire resist dyeing process is over, and the wax has melted away in hot water, a neatly dyed plain or designed fabric is available.

The captivating allure of the Batik print sarees online at Unnati Silks
Unnati Silks has an exclusive range for Batik printed saris and the more special pen Batik sarees. Batik prints are generally light coloured designs on dark coloured backgrounds and the spread of Batik printed sarees in pure handloom cottons in the dark shades of bright colours have single or double colour backgrounds that make the contrasts all the more appealing. Designs range from simple spread motifs on plain backdrops, to floral arrangements or abstract designs spread across the entire saree on single coloured background or half half saree in dual colour.

The quiet elegance of Andhra Handloom sarees

For a region known as the rice bowl of South India, and with other advancements in industry, the Andhra region can also boast of having the highest number of traditional weaving centres or handloom centres in the whole of India. Andhra Handlooms are the symbol of harmony and simplicity while still maintaining a dignified existence. Handlooms that include pure handloom cotton and rich lustrous cotton silk pattu sarees, Andhra Handlooms are known for their quiet play in colors, neither dull or pale nor very bright. The Andhra Handloom sarees peak of soft womanly allure and slightly rich feel. No wonder these sarees have got a good response from the market.

What is special about Andhra Handlooms?
Andhra handloom sarees are simple weaves of smooth texture, soft feel, that are in attractive colors, vibrant but not hitting the eye. Good count weaves the lattice is fine for elaborate prints, but the general patterns are simple geometric or light distributed motifs with captivating borders in varied colors. There is nothing highlighted nor attention centric, yet the saree as a whole by virtue of its simple color play and contrast borders , provides elegance and allure to the wearer of the saree.

Shopping online for Andhra Handloom sarees from Unnati Silks

The pure handloom cotton sarees with the checks pattern of lightly adorned to distributed motifs in bright colors with contrast borders  would do well for the casual occasions, be it office, school or college, for regular use, for the informal parties, social gatherings, outings etc. The zari laden borders are for the more exclusive cotton silk plain field pattus that would do very well for weddings, large parties, festivals, traditional functions. There are two variations in borders, each liked by their own following. There are equal borders on the top and bottom in shining lustrous zari on both sides of the dark field. In the more grandiose version you have rich sparkling zari borders at the top and bottom but the bottom border is wide and eye-catching for the excessive width. While both versions are for the exclusive weddings, grand parties, festivals etc., the latter also does well for bridal attire. Sometimes the pure handloom cotton sarees have color play with contrasting color stripes of different widths for the top and bottom borders. Chiffon Sarees, Online Designer Chiffon Saris, fancy sarees, printed Chiffon saris online, Unnati Silks

Chiffon is a fabric known for its sheer quality, manufactured so fine, that it is transparent, airy and light on the wearer. From the French meaning ’cloth’, it is made from finely drawn out cotton, silk or synthetic fibres, spun in the balanced plain weave style.

The appeal of a chiffon saree
The fineness of the Chiffon Saree comes from the close placing of a number of fibres per inch in the warp (length wise laid out fibres) and weft (breadth wise arrangement of fibres on the warp). The weaving that then takes place in a close pattern, achieves a net that hardly allows anything to pass through. This is known as fine count. Chiffon Sarees with their extremely fine mesh-like weaving and decorated with beautiful designs and patterns are available in most colours and shades. The greatest advantage of the Chiffon Saree lies in the saree not wrinkling and retaining its neat shape throughout the day. Added to it is the fact that apart from seeing that it being delicate it does not fray, it requires very little care to maintain. Preferred for the comfort and ‘breathing’ quality of the fabric that keeps the body cool and refreshed, not to mention the style statement that it makes, Chiffon Sarees are a boon, for the working woman.

The range of Chiffon sarees
Designer prints, modern floral patterns and embroidery are adopted to adorn the saree and are much preferred wear for office-goers, teachers, college professors and even corporate ladies. More recently introduced, are the eye-catching Rajasthani prints of Lehriya and Bandhini to enhance the appeal of the Chiffon Saree. Lehriya refers to a style of long lines across the body of the saree in brilliant and varied colours.

Bandhini style refers to patterns and colours specific to certain festivals and social occasions. Both are equally popular amongst the fashion conscious. Other versions for the Chiffon Saree online have block prints with opposite coloured pallus and patch border on both sides of the saree, sought out mainly for weddings and grand occasions, while the pure fancy Chiffon Saree with Zari Buttis and elegant Pallu is normally chosen for big functions and parties.

Georgette Sarees - Cool Comfort despite Sizzling Weather

The Georgette Saree is a light and springy crepe fabric, with a crimpy look and a slightly dull lustre. Once made from natural silk, it is today mostly made from synthetic filament yarn. As with other crepes, Georgette Saris are plain weave fabrics, created by alternating S and Z twist yarns. Accepting a wide range of dye colours and shades, the Georgette Saree is soft, smooth, and airy, making it ideal for hot and humid weather conditions. Synthetic fibres widely available and comparatively cheap as compared to natural fibres as silk, Georgette Sarees possess the advantages of low moisture absorption, good stain resistance to chemicals, and are easy to wash and maintain. However since they burn easily compared to natural fibres, they are prone to heat damage. Georgette Sarees are available in a wide range of colours and hues on account of their acceptability of most dyes. With attractive designs and accompaniments in vivid colour combinations, the Georgette Saree assumes the level of a refreshing style statement.

Fine Silky tales of the Dupion Silk Sarees

Dupion known as Dupioni or Douppioni is one of the purest silks in its natural form. The Dupion Silk Saree, a highly wrinkle-resistant fabric where creases form so well that the fabric assumes a crisp and neat look. Dupion silk has that exclusive irregular pattern with nubs (lumps of yarn) showing that lends it uniqueness and is much sought after for fashion, grand occasions and drapery. Apart from the nubby texture, the Dupion Silk Saree is also woven with two threads which create a shimmering effect when the fabric is viewed from certain angles.

What is special about the Dupion Silk saree?
The Dupion Silk Saree has charismatic appeal for its unique pattern of weaving, in the beautiful conversion of a seemingly irregular pattern to a well-intentioned design Its inherent property of lumps or silk knots within the yarn fabric that happens when two silkworms in creating their own cocoons, spin them so close to each other that the yarn gets tangled up. The resulting yarn of tangled fibres is taken up in the same form for making the silk thread. Hence the spun thread is thicker, much coarser and has bumps and irregularities in it. The inherent qualities of the Dupion Silk Saree makes it suitable for dyeing the yarn to any colour, is comparatively easy to sew and is a highly wrinkle-resistant fabric. Also the material is totally reversible. The creases form so well that the finished fabric assumes a crisp and neat look Karnataka, is one of the main producers of this type of yarn.
