India is renowned of its ethnic contributions. One of the finely woven ensembles of India is Baluchari sari. These are globally recognized finest fabrics especially known for their intricate golden works.

Baluchari sari, a traditional handmade variety of brilliant modern techniques, which is defined by the pictorial details of great artistry, has an intricate pattern of designs in the form of motifs and embroideries, is depicting the Indian mythology to the whole world. A typical Baluchari sari is beautifully ornamented with variety of artistic designs and traditional arts, which mostly depicts the mythological stories.

Baluchari fabrics are brilliantly adapted to the modern eras as per the enthusiastic response from the women.

The name, Baluchari is a derivative of the name of a small village of West Bengal, named Baluchara or Baluchar. These are exquisitely produced from the town Baluchar which is located in Marshidabad. Due to some natural calamities, the weaving set up was then moved to Bishnupur from Baluchar and the industry grew tremendously there after the British rule.

Baluchari weaving is a time consuming and hardcore process that requires extremely good craftsmanship and hard labour. It takes around a week of time to weave one Baluchari sari.

The materials required in making a Baluchari saris are: pure yarn (silk threads), soda and soap solution, acid colours, trace papers, punching cards, pit looms, vegetable or natural dyes and metallic shades.

To obtain a beautiful and durable fabric, the artisan first rears the silk worms and makes into cocoon later, extracts the raw silk fabrics. Artisan boils the yarn into the mixer of soda and soap solution as to obtain the softness of the fabric. According to the saree design, he uses acid colour in dying process. After that, he stretches the opposite directions of yarn from both sides with palm force.

To design the Pallu or Pallow of the sari, craftsman uses trace papers and punching cards. Trace paper is used to design the motifs and punching cards are used to punch those designs onto the fabrics. Before punching, artisan dyes the fabric into harmony colours. The Malla Empire’s Terra Cotta temples are the basic designs used by the artisans for designing the Pallu.

Looming is the final step where the resulted fabric is dried as per the requirement. To produce the good quality, artisan checks after every step of weaving process.

Sometimes banana plant stems, bamboo trees and natural products like flower dye, fruits dye, neem leaves, turmeric leaves and dried twigs are used in the weaving process.

The mythological designs of the Baluchari make the sari perfect for functions, festivals and ceremonial occasions. Designer Baluchari saris are apt for weddings and bridal ceremonies. Baluchari silk sarees are all time wears of women irrespective of seasons and age groups.
