Narayanpet
Silk & Cotton Handloom Sarees Apex Society, a registered society, had filed
for the GI status for Narayanpet sarees five years back.According
to master weaver Veerabhadraiah, “The industry is not faring well here due to
the high cost of silk yarn and the low wages paid to the workers. In fact,
power looms are now thriving in this town, which was once famous for
handlooms.”Handloomsare family-oriented businesses, wherein every stakeholder gets his share of the
business in the form of capital. However, a venture in the handloom business
has its risks. The interest rates are high, and cash transactions are rare.
