The embroidery
of the Kutch region of Gujarat is world-renowned for its microscopic nature in
the most attractive colours. Termed as ‘Kutchi Bharat’ it has eight different
types of embroidery styles.Traditionally
a cattle breeding tribe, whenever the men would set out for cattle grazing, the
women and small children would sit with needle and thread to do embroidery
work, the little ones being as young as eight years old. This, over time gave
them extraordinary skills to do extremely fine and minute embroidery on their
clothes. Today articles for embroidery include festival blouses called ‘Kanchali’,
the wedding trousseau of the bride to be, the
groom’s wedding wear, curtains
and other household items. There are different sub-groups within the population, each with their
own skill or expertise in a particular style of Kutchi embroidery. The Rabaris
are good at decorative floral designs, panels, geometrical images, in the chain
stitch with mirror work scattered in between.
The Ahirs
are supposed to be superior to the Rabaris in chain stitch, their work being
even more exquisite. Their designs are different though. There is a
style of embroidery known as Hurmitch. This is supposed to be inspired from the
thorny Bavaliya or Acacia tree. The theme is totally disconnected interweaving
stitches arranged into various geometric patterns. In the hurmitch embroideredfabrics, the reverse surface of the fabric contrasts very much with the front.
The Jats of Banni region there have a style characterized by geometrical
decorative designs with flowers in square chain stitch.
Bandhani beautifully decorates and significantly raises the look of
any saree fabric, be it cotton, silk, crepe, georgette, chiffon, satin, supernet or such.Bandhani
or Bandhni or Bandhej is a highly-skilled process involving Tie-Dye method, wherein
the base fabric is first tied at several points by threads and then the threads
are dyed. The manner in which the tying is done decides the resulting pattern,
which could be Leheriya, Mothra, Ekdali or Shikari. Patterns which emerge are
generally dots, strips, waves or squares.
Dark Colours are employed for
dyeing the ‘Bandhani’ and could be natural or artificial. Principally applied
colours being red, green, blue, black or yellow, the background is generally
red or black. The Khatri community of Kutch in Gujarat is known to excel in this art. Works like, that
involving the tying of thousands of miniscule knots on the fabric, which spread
and form exquisite designs on opening after the dyeing process, speak volumes
for their skill.Bhuj and
Mandvi are places in this district of Kutch, renowned in India for this sort of
fine Bandhani art. Saurashtra is another region in Gujarat, India, also known
for its Bandhani work, but with a variety different from that of the Kutch
region.
Neighbouring Rajasthan again has its own style of Bandhani, unique
to its region. Designs and colours differ, with significance attached to
certain colours. Red conveys a newly married bride, yellow conveys that the
wearer has recently become a mother, are typical examples.Bandhani sarees are a huge draw both in domestic markets and with a
growing lot of international buyers. Appreciated for the art and sought for the
unique appeal, this ethnic form will continue to flourish till such time that
traditional offerings are in vogue. There are a whole lot of designer Bandhani Sarees with colourful
prints and exquisite embroidery that are extremely stunning. Recent fashion finds
popularity with single-colour sarees or those with contrasting colours on the
body and the border.
