Chanderi,
is in Ashoknagar district of Madhya Pradesh (MP). It is known for its Chanderi
Sarees, which are sheer in quality, fine in texture and are a marvellous work
in art and design. A weaving art since royal times, the hand woven ChanderiSaree extracts a lot of patience, dedication and craftsmanship in its
making. Today it is also woven on modern
looms but the difference in quality is visible.Enhancing the beauty of the Chanderi saree isthe ‘Butti’ or motif, which is an interlaced, hand-woven, shape, consisting of
gold, silver or copper coated threads.
The
Asharfi Butti, or Gold Coin shaped Butti has been a popular choice since
earlier times, though the pure gold or silver used in its making has given way
to tested Zari, which is woven from synthetic yarn by needles of different
sizes. The bigger version of the ‘Butti’ is popularly known as ‘Butta’.A major difference in the making methods is
that the ‘Buttis’ of hand-woven Chanderi sarees, retain their shape and
appearance throughout the life of the fabric, with no thread coming out from
the ‘Butti’ structure. The same cannot be said for the one woven from synthetic
yarn, which tends to lose the initial shape and appearance after some time.
This, despite the good care, that is expected to be taken, for this delicate
fabric in both cases.
Chanderi
Sarees can have either silk or cotton as the base fabric. Brilliant floral
designs or batik, adorn the cotton version of the saree, while the silk saree
has zari brocades with embroidery of different patterns as Zari Zardosi, Ari,Gota,Chikan,
to name a few. Buttis once only hand-woven on the fabric, have been replaced by
gold-printed ‘Butti’prints on the silk fabric body. The elegance, and the
grandeur that the Chanderi Saree lends to the wearer, makes it ideal for
special occasions, marriages or social functions. It could also serve as
corporate-wear.
Since the inception
of the Chanderi fabric and primarily ladies Sarees, the butiis on the Fabric
are hand-woven and absolutely woven on Handloom. There is no use of any other
process of manufacturing and it is Gold coated, Silver coated and as well as
Copper coated. Now a days Tested Zari Butti are also common and in use. The
Tested Zari is made with the use of Synthetic yarn. The Buttis are made by use
of Needles. Number of Needles used depends upon the number of Buttis and its
size. For each Butti/Butta separate Needles are used.
All the weavers involved in this process are experts in it since
they have been doing this for long. time. The most popular and traditional kind
of Butti is Asharfi Butti, which is in shape of Asharfi (woven in pure gold and
silver Zari and now a day it is also woven in Tested Zari). This kind of Butti
was in use in past only by the Royal families because it is very expensive as
genuine Gold and Silver is used. The Butti which is big is size is popularly
called as Butta with all other specifications. More so and it is there
ancestral business and trade.
