The Patola saree is one the finest hand woven sarees produced in India today.Patola is a place associated with Patan, Gujarat state, in India. Besides Patan, Surat is known for Patola patterns on velvets. These sarees are created by using the resist dying technique.
The Patola silk has an exciting history, this sarees are brought in Gujarat by Salvi community of silk weavers from Maharashtra and Karnataka. It is said that these weavers arrived in Patan in the 12th century to make the most of the patronage of the Solanki Rajputs.

Patola sarees are woven in silk called Patola silk. This sarees are still made by handful of master wearers from Patan and Surat kwon for their zari work. Patola sarees are known for their flaming bright colors and geometric patterns interwoven with folk motifs.

Patola sarees are done in two types one is Rajkot Patola this is only vertically resist dyed called single ikkat. The other one is Patan Patola this is horizontally resist dyed called double ikkat.
While making the double ikkat Patola sarees each fabric consist of a number of warp threads and a single weft tread, which joins s the warp threads together. Each one of the warp and weft threads is tie and dyed according to the design patterns, such that the knotted portions of the thread do not catch the colors. The results are that both sides of the sarees look exactly alike as if it is printed on both sides with the same design.

Patola sarees are used the vegetable dyes and natural colors. But, nowadays the chemical dyes are also used.
The Patola sarees are designed in geometric and floral patterns like the peepal tree leaf or paan leaf designs. And the different motifs like dancing women, elephant or parrot designs. This sarees are designed with bright colors and decorated with zardosi, kundans, sequins work.
Patola silk sarees are apt for weddings, grand parties, and traditional occasions, to give a gorgeous look to the wearer.
