The jacquard loom is basically a loom with an attachment between the
warp threads that provides for better warp control and flexibility during the
weaving of a fabric. Named after its inventor Joseph Marie Jacquard, it allows
patterns to be created in extraordinary shapes in fine detail.Jacquard refers basically to the arrangement that guides and shapes the
patterns that are formed. It best finds use in the making of patterned knitwear
and machine made knitted fabrics like jerseys. The jacquard arrangement initially started as a mechanical device with
punched cards containing the fabric design in a continuous sequence. During the
fabric wave, the feed from this supplementary arrangement was instrumental in
the creation of the woven patterns on the fabric.Today there are electronically controlled jacquards which have increased
capacity and finer control to weave exquisite patterns on the fabric.
The punching of cards increases with the complexity of a design. On a
small loom there are very many repeats to be performed. Skilled manpower to
operate the jacquard loom was scarce. Hence jacquards were preferred for large
batch sizes only. The invention of the electronic controlled jacquard loom, saw to extremely
fine controlling and with large capacity machines, the repeats reduced
substantially. This also drastically cut down the weaving time and operating
costs.Jacquard
weaving is mostly done for linen products, apparel fabrics and items of home
furnishings. Most fabric materials make use of the jacquard arrangement for
fine detailed pattern weaves in the weave of fabrics.
The
saree has made good use of the jacquard loom for raised design woven into a fabric. Light weight
satin, charmeuse, chiffon, silk organza, crepe de chine, georgette are some of
the fibers used for weave.
