Kalamkari paintings traditionally
originated from the temple-town called Srikalahasti in Chittoor district, and
Machilipatnam in Krishna district, of Andhra Pradesh.
Kalamkari, it means
craftsmanship though the use of a pen. Kalamkari is an ethnic art involving
hand painting or block printing. Kalamkari means the
art of kalam or pen that is used for free hand drawing of the subject and
filling in the colors. Entirely hand worked, it also in today’s times includes
hand block printing.
Kalamkari printings are
done on various fabrics like cotton, chiffon, georgette, silk, and crepe. The Kalamkari printed Kurtis are designed in tribal
art, temple designs, and different types of designed motifs.
The cotton fabric
Kalamkari printed Kurtis are soft, airy, and light in weight, to make them
extremely comfortable to wear in the summer season.
Nowadays these Kurtis are also
designed with small floral borders, different color combinations, and different
motif designs. Flowers, leafs, trees give a fresh look and are popular motifs.
The vegetable dyes used
in Kalamkari printed Kurtis give a classy look to the wearer on account of
vibrant colours and pastel hues.
Block printed Kalamkari Kurtis are designed in different floral patterns
and motifs to give a fresh breeze look that is most appealing. These printed
Kurtis are worn as daily wear, for casual parties, social visits and corporate
