Venkatagiri handlooms were once
patronized by royalty for their weaving excellence and are today sought after
as ethnic fabrics of unique and long-lasting qualities.
The mottos of India are “tradition and
culture”. Traditional saris of South India have vibrant heritage in and around
the India. Especially, Venkatagiri handlooms play a vital role in India for
their traditional weavings and ethical designs.
Venkatagiri, a historic town of handloom
fabrics, known for its exclusive designs and fine weavings, is a hallmark of
every South Indian bride. Handlooms of Venkatagiri are having a magnetic appeal
in their weaving and tempting the women towards their impeccable designs. These
are airy, soft, smooth, transparent, durable and breathable fabrics, suitable
for all regions and seasons irrespective of age groups.
Venkatagiri
handlooms are accompanied with attractive prints, elegant borders and
eye-catching pallus. As finely woven and comfortable fabrics, they
became extremely popular worldwide. An
interesting fact is, the weavers of Venkatagiri handlooms have been awarded by
the Government of India for their unique weaving techniques.
The history of
finest Venkatagiri handlooms dates back to the early 1700s, where the saris
were patronized by the Velugoti dynasty of Nellore. These
sarees were woven only for the women of royal families on special demands. More recently, Venkatagiri handlooms have
got widespread publicity by importing Jamadhani styles of design from
Bangladesh.
As per the name, Venkatagiri Handlooms
have their origin in Venkatagiri, India. But there are some interesting and
unknown facts behind this town such as,
The original name of ‘Venkatagiri’ is
‘Kali Mili’. There are two major reasons behind the name Kali Mili, one is, it
is the name of their goddess Kalivelamma and the other is, it was the surname of
their dynasty, Kali Mili Gobburu Jaggaraju. Later, Velugoti Royal renamed it
with Vaishnava name “Venkatagiri”.
Pit loom is a loom of pits and peddle,
which is fixed at ground level. Weaver sits on the floor and then weaves using
hands and legs. These are the pure handy works, where the yarn is washed and
then dyed by desired colours. Then weaver turns the yarn in the wheel to mix
the colour to yarn. By turning yarn into the wheel, weaver produces thread
which is used for wept.
Through warp and wafting, the yarns
are loaded into pit looms. By this, a unique and durable fabric is produced. Wafting
and warping is called as Pacham. To weave one Pacham of four saris, it requires
around 1 to 2 weeks.
There are different varieties in
Venkatagiri handlooms such as: Venkatagiri 100, Venkatagiri Pattu and
Venkatagiri Silk, where Venkatagiri 100 is the lightest variety and the other
two are finest and richest varieties.
Venkatagiri
Saris are perfect corporate wears of
working women. Venkatagiri Pattu Saris with designer works are apt for bridal
and wedding ceremonies.
